When Obedience Feels Heavy

Jun 22, 2026By FirstBCBP

There are days when saying “yes” to God feels light and joyful, and then there are days when obedience feels like lifting something far heavier than we expected. I once spoke with a woman who had spent years pouring into people who continually drained her. She loved deeply, served faithfully, and prayed earnestly—but she was exhausted. “I didn’t know obedience could hurt like this,” she whispered. Her words echo the heart of Jeremiah in this week’s Scripture.

Jeremiah 20:7–13 reveals a prophet caught between divine purpose and human pain. He felt deceived, overwhelmed, and pushed beyond what he believed he could bear. Yet even in his anguish, he could not silence the fire of God’s word burning within him. His calling cost him comfort, reputation, and peace—but it also anchored him to a God who never abandoned him.

“Sometimes the call of God will cost you more than you expected, but it will never leave you without His strength.”

Jeremiah’s struggle teaches us something essential: obedience is not always easy, but it is always held by God. There are moments when we must stop bleeding for people who continue to cut us. There are battles we cannot win with our own hands, but we can win on our knees. Prayer becomes the place where we regain clarity, courage, and the assurance that God fights for us.

If you find yourself in a season where obedience feels heavy, consider these steps:

  1. Pause and acknowledge the weight. God is not intimidated by your honesty.
  2. Return to prayer as your first response, not your last resort.
  3. Release what drains you and hold onto what God has assigned to you.
  4. Remember that God stands beside you as a mighty warrior.

You may feel stretched, but you are not forsaken. You may feel weary, but you are not alone. God sees the cost of your obedience, and He strengthens those who choose to trust Him in the hard places.
